SharePoint Free Stuff: Access Checker Web Part
Day 26 of one-BPD-until-Xmas proudly presents: The Access Checker Web Part!

This free little puppy installs both as a web part and as a Site Settings link, and allows you to view a tree for a given user showing their permissions at each level in the SharePoint hierarchy (though it doesn't extend to document library folders).  In true Christmas spirit, stuff the selected user has access to (of the selected access type) is green, and stuff they can't is red.

This a very helpful little utility for getting some visibility around security - if you want something more powerful, there's other (not-free) solutions out there such as DeliverPoint.

SharePoint Free Stuff: SmartTools for SharePoint
You might have heard of SmartPart by Jan Tielens... well how about SmartTools by the same?

SmartTools is a set of 4 add-ons for SharePoint, free of course, and CodePlex of course.

You get:
  • A what's new web part
  • A basic AJAXy auto complete field
  • Enhanced site actions menu
  • A Copy to Clipboard custom action.

To be honest the only one I've ever used is enhanced site actions... and also the basic AJAXy auto complete (but only to grab the code and use it in a similar solution - in fact it's a good example of what you can do with custom field types).

That was OBPDUC17.  You stay classy now!
